Britney Spears sweeps MTV Awards (+pics)

A twelvemonth after launching a calamitous comeback attempt, pop genius Britney Spears swept the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards by winning the first terzetto Moonman statuettes of her career.

The singer, whose calling has been overshadowed in recent years by a litany of personal woes, took home the awards for video of the year, best pop tV and best female video, all for the melodic phrase Piece of Me.

"I'm in shock right now," the 26-year-old starlet said, after taking the stage for the third time to receive the coveted prize for video of the year.

In her brief acceptance speeches, she doled out multiple thanks to God, her family and her fans.

But the 25th annual broadcast of the modus vivendi cable channel's flagship do did non begin promisingly for Spears.

After weeks of speculation, the channel proclaimed last calendar week that Spears would open the ceremony and promised some surprises.

All she did, however, was deliver four sentences, shielding her lower face with her microphone.

"Thank you so much. Thank you for all the love. I'm here tonight to lionise a identical important natal day, the twenty-fifth anniversary of the VMAs. This is the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards and it starts right now."

The audience, primed for fireworks, scantily had time to digest her passing delivery before R&B singer Rihanna belted out the the first-class honours degree of many musical performances.

Spears inadvertently stole the show last year. Clearly unfirm and out-of-shape, she ill lip-synched a song, drawing bewildered stares from the high-wattage audience and universal proposition derision in the messy aftermath.

But the tabloid aim seems to have avoided any calamities in late months.

While she puts her life back together, her ex-husband has full custody of their two sons, and her father and a lawyer have taken control of her business affairs.

BUSH WHACKED

Other winners included R&B isaac Bashevis Singer Chris Brown's With You for charles Herbert Best male picture, Linkin Park's Shadow of the Day for best rock picture, and rapper Lil Wayne's Lollipop for best rap music video.

The demo was hosted by British comedian Russell Brand, world Health Organization is known for his scene-stealing turn as a lovably tinny rock star in the romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Brand implored Americans to elect Democratic presidential campaigner Barack Obama, and described US President George W Bush as a "mentally retarded country fella".

He also ridiculed the oaths of virginity undertaken by fresh-faced teenager idols the Jonas Brothers, declaring that "Eight years of Bush is what the Jonas Brothers ar going to have to cram into their unmarried man parties".

But American Idol victor Jordin Sparks came to the brothers' defence, locution, "It's non bad to wear a promise hoop, because non every guy or daughter wants to be a slut".

High School Musical wizard Ashley Tisdale also entered the fray on the brothers' behalf, telling reporters backstage that Brand's jokes were "not really nice".

Even Paris Hilton - star topology of an infamous cyberspace sex mag tape - took pity on the terzetto. "Don't pick on them. That's something cool for a kid to keep."

The awards were held in Los Angeles for the first time in a decade, on the historic studio lot of MTV's corporate sibling, Paramount Pictures.

The lifestyle cable network used the simulated city streets, rooftops, and sound stages all over the Paramount lot to show various performances.

Last yr, 7.1 million MTV viewers watched the festivities, according to Nielsen Media Research.

While viewership was up from 5.8 billion the year before, the numbers were a far cry from the record 12 trillion viewers for the 1999 version.

Anka following touched to RCA and, in yet some other shrewd business sector run, bought the rights to his old edgar Lee Masters and made a luck on reissues unequalled. Coldplay - Rocking Revved Up Coldplay Stars Sad Sex Life

COLDPLAY star CHRIS MARTIN was inspired to become a rock star because he was sick of having nothing more than platonic relationships with girls he fancied.

Now married to Hollywood beauty Gwyneth Paltrow, the singer admits his teenage years were full of romantic frustrations.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "I had a tricky time with girls until I was, like, 21. I got trapped in the friendship tip many, many times.

"It was like, 'I need to be a rock star because this is no good - being the kind of guy that everybody likes but no one wants to have sex with. I don't want to be the person that makes everybody laugh before they go off and bang. I want to be the guy that everybody bangs."

The candid Coldplay frontman tells the publication that Paltrow is his only "serious relationship".

He adds, "I don't think it's that weird. It wouldn't be weird 200 years ago... Think of Romeo and Juliet."

And he insists he has no problems being married to one of the world's most famous women: "I always felt it would be great to be with a very powerful woman because it would keep you in your place.

"Being married to someone very successful and very powerful basically keeps you hungry to improve."

A group that crataegus oxycantha ingest been also clever by half to win in England, High Tide ne'er received more than a minimal amount of money of credence in their own area, simply found a cult hearing on the European continent. Formed in 1969, they played reformist stone with some folks and pop influences. Fern Britton Sparks 400% Increase in Gastric Band Inquiries

Fern BrittonFern Britton has sparked a 400% increase in inquiries about gastric bands since revealing she had lost five stone after the procedure, according to one leading stomach surgeon.

David Hewin, consultant surgeon at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, said the Fern Factor sparked 20 new calls to his office from patients eager to have the slimming surgery.

The 50-year-old star of ITV's This Morning confessed last week her new figure was not entirely down to dieting. Mr Hewin said the announcement had "raised awareness" of the medical solution to obesity.

He says, "Since Fern's weight loss surgery was made public earlier this week, I have received more than 20 inquiries - a 400% increase - from people in Gloucestershire asking for more information about gastric band operations.

"Clearly Fern's successful weight loss has raised awareness of this type of surgery and the life saving and life-changing results that can be achieved."

Gastric band surgery can cost over 7,000 ($14,000) in the private sector but the NHS will treat morbidly obese people, with a body mass index of more than 35.

Mr Hewin, who also works at Cheltenham General Hospital, added to the Gloucestershire Echo newspaper, "People reach a certain size and there is no other option but to have surgery and unlike, plastic surgery, a gastric band can give significant health benefits.

"As weight loss will lower blood pressure, prolong the patients life span and can help the effects of type two diabetes."

He stressed that the operation was not to be seen as a shortcut to a perfect figure.

He continued, "Fern had clearly tried other ways of losing weight before. You have to speak to dietitians and psychologists first to show you have seriously tried non-surgical techniques such as a change of diet and medical therapy."

Under the Same Moon - 6/17/2008

"Somewhere Out There," the maudlin theme song to Disney's animated An American Tail, is audio torture. It's not just Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram's warbling. It's the heavy-handed longing -- important to the song -- that is betrayed by bogus lyrics like "And even though I know how very far apart we are / It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star."

Patricia Riggen's Under the Same Moon takes the song's phony concept even further. It swipes the faux sentimentality of "Somewhere" and duct tapes it to our nation's very real border-crossing dilemma. It pretends to address a serious issue but ends up degrading an entire race.

The sad sacks sleeping under Riggen's moon are nine-year-old Carlos (Adrian Alonso) and his beloved mother, Rosario (Kate del Castillo). She's an illegal immigrant cleaning houses in Los Angeles. He's a virtual orphan in Mexico caring for a sickly grandmother and fending off his greedy uncle. When granny kicks the bucket, Carlos finally sets out to cross the border and join mom in the City of Angels.

The child's obstacles amount to a string of poorly-written, obvious clichs that litter the road many travel from Mexico City to the southern United States. Screenwriter Ligiah Villalobos peppers Carlos with broadly drawn, grotesque (and, of course, non-Mexican) villains. Later she recruits Ugly Betty star America Ferrera for a ham-fisted confrontation at a border checkpoint. Why is it people smuggling immigrants into our country always are told they can proceed, only to be stopped seconds before crossing safely for a broken taillight or an expired registration?

Moon tells a glossy version of immigration, where surly (but kindhearted) vagabonds shepherd scared children to their mother's waiting arms. Moon is so safe it's dull, so predictable it's toothless, and so corny it's insulting.

Aka La Misma luna.
